07-05-10 from Chip:
Friends & Family,
Kim has arrived in Honduras and has a special cell phone that allows her to receive text messages for free. Unfortunately, a lot of US carriers, including Verizon, are not compatible with her phone. If you want to be able to send her text messages, you can sign up at the website below and send her text messages for 15 cents. You have to send the text messages to her Belgium cell phone number which is 32489963299. It costs her about 50 cents for her to reply to your text message, but nothing to receive your text message.
It is very expensive for her to use the cell phone to call home, but we got it for her so she could stay in touch with us periodically and in emergencies. She checked in with us last night. She got into La Ceiba, Honduras without any big problems. She was picked up at the airport by the director of the Language School and taken to the home of one of the teachers. She said there were two other American girls there. I think she will be placed with a Honduran family today.
She will study Spanish this first week at the school, and then head out to the project at the end of the week. The first text message we got from her was “An albino lizard jumped on my toothbrush. I’m coming home.” the adventure begins! For more information on the project where she will be volunteering, check out this website. www.lasonrisa.info
