Yes….the beat goes on!

So this morning I came in to work (at American Greetings) and despite being knee-deep in a Valentine’s Day and an Anniversary project, I realized I had a brainstorming session for a new Mother’s Day program. The meeting including people from planning, the design studio, and my whole team (including my big boss) from editorial…..
I quickly got my bearings, grabbed a notepad and found a seat at the table. The woman in charge greeted everyone and said, “As you all know I asked you to bring 5 pieces of reference to share with the group, so let’s go ahead and get started with that”. My co-worker (who is also new and not used to scanning to the bottom of meeting requests to see any additional notes, i.e. bring references) and I looked at each other in sheer horror at the prospect of having nothing to say when it came to our turns. After a few moments of whispering panic, another co-worker offered to share her references. Nice as that was, there really weren’t enough to divide by three.

I sat for a moment holding one measly piece of borrowed copy, starting to sweat a little, when suddenly a light went on. By some miracle I had put three of Gramma’s books in my purse this morning just as I was walking out the door. I had some thought of eventually sharing them with my boss and others. So I gave the reference to my partner in crime and said I’d be right back. I ran to my office and grabbed the books, scanning them in the hallway, placing post-it notes to look extra prepared.

My two co-workers made their references work just fine. My boss even had references so I knew I had to pull this off. When it finally came to my turn I gave a quick introduction of Gramma and her work and I proceeded to read a number of poems, including two completely apropo pieces entitled “Mother’s Day” and “Happy Mother’s Day”. The whole room lit up with laughter, compliments, and nods of agreement. I went on to say that these poems help get inside the head of a mother and what is important to her, and how crucial that perspective is when sending a Mother’s Day card. Again, nods of agreement.

I looked across the table to see my boss, Ines, shoot me a little wink and mouth the words “Nice job”.

Phew!

Thanks Gramma Janet.
